Vondel published this work decades before Milton published Paradise Lost. Granted Paradise Lost is an important treasure of English literature, it is a shame that has completely overshadowed Vondel's work to the point that encyclopedias about angels glorify what Milton did in /5(3).

Joost van den Vondel (Dutch: [ˈjoːst fɑn dɛn ˈvɔndəl]; 17 November – 5 February ) was a Dutch poet, writer and playwright. He is considered the most prominent Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th century.
